Out in Our Community: May 2026
At the Carson City Library, we believe the library belongs to everyone—and sometimes that means taking the library beyond our walls. Through our Programming & Outreach efforts, we bring books, learning opportunities, and library resources directly into the community, meeting people where they live, learn, work, and gather.
Throughout May, our team spent time in classrooms, parks, local businesses, and community events, connecting with residents of all ages and sharing the many ways the Carson City Library supports lifelong learning. From early literacy storytimes to school visits and family celebrations, every outreach event gave us the opportunity to build new relationships, strengthen existing partnerships, and invite more people to discover everything their library has to offer.
Encouraging a Love of Reading
We kicked off the month with our Buzzing Bees Storytime outreach, visiting Western Nevada College, Eagle Valley, and Smart Start. These visits bring stories, songs, movement, and early literacy activities directly to young learners in educational settings, helping children develop foundational reading skills while creating positive, engaging experiences with books.
Early literacy outreach is one of the most rewarding parts of our work. By connecting with children and caregivers outside the library, we’re able to encourage a love of reading from an early age and introduce families to the many programs and resources available through the Carson City Library.
Later that evening, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo with our friends at La Tapatia, hosting games of Lotería while sharing information about library programs, services, and upcoming events. Community celebrations like these provide wonderful opportunities to meet new families, celebrate the diverse cultures that make Carson City unique, and build meaningful connections beyond the library.
Connecting with Students
Throughout May, our Programming & Outreach team also visited Carson Middle School and Carson High School, continuing our commitment to supporting students throughout the community.
School outreach allows us to introduce students to library resources that extend far beyond books. During these visits, students learned about library cards, makerspace equipment, volunteer opportunities, digital resources, upcoming events, and our annual Summer Reading Challenge. Whether students visit the library for homework help, creative projects, technology access, or simply a good book, we want every young person to know the library is a welcoming place where they belong.
These partnerships with local schools help strengthen the connection between education and lifelong learning, encouraging students to see the library as a valuable resource long after the school day ends.
Building Community Connections
Libraries play an important role in creating informed, connected communities, and May offered several opportunities to do just that.
During our Civic Engagement Outreach, library staff connected residents with information about library services while highlighting the library’s role as a trusted source for information and civic engagement.
We also had a wonderful time participating in Kids to Parks Day at Mills Park. Families stopped by to enjoy activities, learn about upcoming library programs, and discover how reading, outdoor exploration, and hands-on learning can work together to inspire curiosity. Events like these allow us to reach families in fun, informal settings while encouraging children to continue exploring, learning, and playing all summer long.
Later in the month, we returned to the community with our outreach table at Galaxy Theatre, where moviegoers had the opportunity to learn about library services, upcoming programs, and the many free resources available with a Carson City Library card.
Bringing the Library to You
Every outreach event reflects the Carson City Library’s commitment to making library services accessible to everyone. While many people visit us each day, outreach allows us to connect with community members who may not yet realize everything the library has to offer.
Whether we’re sharing stories with preschoolers, introducing students to makerspace opportunities, celebrating community traditions, or answering questions at local events, our goal remains the same: to inspire curiosity, encourage lifelong learning, and build meaningful connections throughout Carson City.
Throughout May, our Programming & Outreach team participated in seven outreach events, connecting with more than 600 community members across the city. Each conversation, library card application, program recommendation, and smiling face reminds us why outreach is such an important part of our mission.
We’re grateful to our community partners for welcoming us into their spaces and look forward to continuing these connections throughout the year.
