Books, Barks, and Reading Buddies at Carson City Library

Every good story deserves a reading buddy—even one with plush paws and a wag-worthy personality. This August and September, Carson City Library brought families together through dog-themed programs celebrating books, creativity, and care for animals.
In honor of National Dog Month in August, the Adopt-a-Dog Reading Buddy challenge encouraged children to read five books to earn a plush dog of their own. On August 27, 138 people joined us for the Adopt-a-Dog Reading Buddy event to celebrate their reading achievements, pick up their new companions, and enjoy crafts.
The fun didn’t have to end at the library doors. A plush reading buddy can become a patient audience for practicing aloud or a familiar friend to cuddle beside during a story, helping young readers build a routine they look forward to.
Throughout August, families had plenty of other
ways to join the canine celebration. Dog Suncatchers invited children ages birth through five to get creative on August 20, while Discover Your Perfect Dog offered an interactive activity for families on August 25. From August 16–31, library-themed dog stickers and a dog scavenger hunt added a little extra adventure to library visits.
Families also put their creativity to work for a good cause. During DIY Tug Toys, participants could make toys to
donate to the Humane Society, turning their love of dogs into a thoughtful gift for animals in the community.
The canine connection continued into September with Dog Talk With Kendall Brown on September 19 and Create a Critter for children ages birth through five on September 24. From finding a plush reading companion to making something for a dog in need, these programs offered families fresh ways to read, create, and connect—one paw at a time.
