The Carson City Library will host a community read of My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir for Capital City Reads, Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club. Capital City Reads takes place every April as a celebration of National Library Week, bringing people together through reading and discussion. This year’s program starts with National Library Week on April 19 and will run through May 16.
My First Summer in the Sierra is a nature writing classic that showcases the mountain range we see to the west of Carson City every day. The book was published in 1911 after Muir spent several decades as an established writer of articles and books about nature, and is based on his journal kept while working as a sheep herder in the Yosemite area during the summer of 1868. The Sierra Nevada so inspired John Muir that he dedicated his life to advocating for preservation of what he called their “divine, enduring, unwasteable wealth” – even then at risk from forestry, grazing, mining, and development. Muir’s efforts eventually led to both the forming of the Sierra Club and the establishment of Yosemite as one of the nation’s first national parks.
Ebook and audiobook downloads of My First Summer in the Sierra will be available from the library’s OverDrive collection. Carson City residents can sign in to the OverDrive app or website with their library card, or request an Instant Digital Card with their mobile phone number when signing in to the app or website.
In collaboration with Carson City Parks & Recreation, a story stroll with excerpts from the book will be set up in Carson River Park, located at 5013 Carson River Rd. Tag @CarsonCityLibrary in your outdoor exploration and nature journaling photos to share your adventures!
