The Carson City Library is hosting a community read of To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers for Capital City Reads, Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club. Capital City Reads takes place every April as a celebration of National Library Week, bringing people together through reading and discussion. This year, take-home kits are also available. Registration is required below. Only one kit per family.
In To Be Taught, If Fortunate, a space explorer in a planetary system fifteen light-years away begins to chronicle the story of the wonders and dangers of her mission, in the hope that someone back home might still be listening. The four-person team has been surveying habitable exoplanets and extraterrestrial life forms in a star system 15 light years away from Earth, but things at home have changed while they have been away on their long mission. The title comes from a message by Kurt Waldheim, Secretary-General of the United Nations, as recorded on the Voyager Golden record sent into space in 1977: “We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship – to teach, if we are called upon; to be taught, if we are fortunate.” Becky Chambers is a science fiction author based in Northern California, best known for her Hugo Award-winning Wayfarers series.
Ebook and audiobook downloads of To Be Taught, If Fortunate will be available from the library’s OverDrive collection. Carson City residents can sign in to the OverDrive app or website (silverstarcoop.overdrive.com) with their library card, or request an Instant Digital Card with their mobile phone number when signing in to the app or website.
This Capital City Reads program is made possible by the Friends of the Carson City Library.
