Children's Use of the Internet

Children using computer

The Carson City Library will provide filtering software on computers in the children and young adult areas in an attempt to limit access to age-appropriate Internet sites by minor children to the extent that is feasible given technical requirements and support.

However, the Carson City Library cannot guarantee that filtering technology will successfully block all inappropriate sites. Such controls cannot be absolutely fool proof. Parents and guardians must ultimately accept responsibility for determining appropriate use of the Internet by their minor children. Any restriction of the minor child’s access to the Internet remains the sole responsibility of the parent, guardian, or caregiver.

Guidelines for the Use of the Internet on Children and Young Adult Computers

In order to provide flexible Internet access to young people the Carson City Library restricts access to children’s and young adult computers to minor children (under 18) and their accompanying parents or guardians.

Minor children (17 and under) may use filtered workstations without parental permission.

Parents are encouraged to guide their minor child’s use of the Internet and to read
Child Safety on the Information Highway www.safekids.com/child_safety.htm, produced jointly by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Interactive Services Association.

Resources available on youth computers include the Internet, Microsoft Office, and pre-loaded games. Use of youth computers is on a first-come, first-served basis. No advance reservations will be taken. No fee for use will be charged. Printers are available for use by youth library patrons.
Youth patrons are limited to two-one hour sessions (120 minutes total) of computer use per day.

Library Internet Rules

The following rules are for everyone's safety and to show respect for everyone in the Library. If you do not follow these rules, you could lose your Internet privileges. If you have any questions, or if there is something you don't understand, please ask a Library staff person to explain.
